Ask a physics major, and he will probably say English literature. Ask a history major what the hardest college course is, and she very well may say college algebra. The point is this: we all have courses that are really hard for us individually, but are there some that almost everyone agrees upon? The answer is “yes,” if we are to believe social media and paper writing services. So, here is a listing of the most difficult college courses as informally elected by students themselves.

Organic Chemistry

This is a pre-med course that will drive most wannabe doctors crazy. The problem seems to be the sheer amount of information that must be memorized and the amazing amount of homework. It takes a truly motivated student to get through this course. In fact, this is the course that “weeds” out many pre-med students who then change their majors.

Linguistics

This is one of the hardest college courses because it is actually a series of courses that must be taken in sequence for an advanced degree in languages. Basically, it is a study of the structure of language itself, and given the number of languages in the world, this is no easy task. Many students who begin this series of courses opt to change their majors as well.

Economics

No one thought economics was too tough when they took it in high school. Heck, you just studied a few theories and laws, and it all seemed to make sense. Unfortunately, college level coursework in economics involves not just theory but a great deal of math, particularly complex algebraic formulas and statistics. Because of the math, these become some of the hardest college classes, especially for students who weren’t expecting it.

Quantum Physics/Mechanics

Students state that you either “get” this coursework or you don’t. There is no in-between at all. What makes it is one of the hardest classes in college is the large number of formulas – formulas that must be understood so that they can be applied to actual problem-solving. The problem is there is not one formula that is necessarily correct, but if a student doesn’t understand them, s/he has no idea which formulas might be used to solve a problem.

Human Anatomy

This is another one of those courses that many students who intended to go into biology or medicine took in high school and found to be relatively easy. What makes this course so difficult is the memorization involved. Every muscle has a name, not just bones and organs.

Calculus

Math majors who took AP classes in high school may still struggle with college calculus. So much theory in the abstract, students who want one right method and one right answer will be struggling for sure.

Philosophy

How tough can it be to just study the thoughts of people who sat around and contemplated existence? Well, pretty hard actually. While it may not be the hardest college course of studies, it is certainly no “walk in the park.” Just figuring out what many of these philosophers were really trying to say can be a huge challenge.

Statistics

For non-math people, this course is just “beyond the pale.” It involves research, gathering data and then analyzing that data mathematically for significances. Liberal arts majors freak out over this course. Much of the issue is determining which formulas are correct to use for the analysis that needs to be done.

English Literature

Again, who can have a tough time with literature, right? You just read stuff and then discuss it and maybe write a paper or two. Not so fast. When you have to read original old English and attempt to understand what is being said, you have quite another matter on your hands. STEM students hate literature courses, as a rule, and fortunately there will only be a couple required. Staying away from early English literature is probably good advice. Thermodynamics

You’d better have a really solid background in physics for this one. Theory, concepts, memorizing huge amounts of information, and lots and lot of homework make this course something that only to notch physics students should take
